Fast Five (2011) Review :There’s a running theory in my house that The Rock, also known as Dwayne Johnson (sorry buddy, but you’ll always be The Rock to me), and Vin Diesel are actually the same being. Like they’re different versions of the same dude from parallel dimensions, or some sci-fi trope like that. They make similar movies. Couldn’t you imagine Diesel playing the protagonist in “Faster”, or The Rock with silly looking sunglasses bouncing around space in the “Riddick” movies. Even the children’s films they do, like “The Pacifier” (Diesel) and “The Toothfairy” (Rock), could have gone either way. Now before you get your panties in all twisted in a fit of rage and start bombarding the comment section with snarky notes about how I’m obviously a dumbass who has never seen a movie before, I’m just trying to say that I imagine that there are a lot of casting lists in Hollywood with these guys in spots one and two, that’s all.

The latest installment of the “Fast/Furious” franchise, “Fast Five”, perhaps the fastest and most furious thus far in the series, finally brings these two well-muscled action stars together. I was a bit concerned that as soon as they met onscreen that some sort of rupture would appear in the very fabric of our universe, because, as we all know, two versions of the same person from different planes of existence cannot simultaneously occupy the same space. That’s elementary science fiction. Sorry, I’ve been watching a lot of “Fringe” lately, but putting Diesel and The Rock together in a single movie is a bit of a mind-blowing proposition. Going in, I wasn’t sure a single celluloid frame could handle that much man-beef.

And not only does “Fast Five” bring these two meaty juggernauts together, but it is also a reunion of almost every memorable character from the first four films. With the notable exceptions of Michelle Rodriguez and Lucas Black, the cast features Dom Toretto (Diesel), Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker), Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Ludacris), Gisele (Gal Gadot), Leo (Tego Calderon), Santos (Don Omar), and Vince (Matt Schulze). There’s even a we-need-to-put-together-a-crew team assembly montage. It’s a good time, especially if you’re already a fan.

“Fast Five” opens with Dom, recently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. So of course, Brian and Mia break him out in a daring high-speed chase where Brian basically trips a bus. Think about how you would stick your leg out and trip someone, and that’s pretty much what he does, only to a bus, which makes it rad. The trio, now headline-making fugitives, flee to Rio de Janeiro, where Vince lives. Mia finds out she’s pregnant (don’t babies always fuck things up?), they all go on a job that turns bad, and run afoul of Rio’s biggest crime lord (Joaquim de Almeida). Not only that, but Hobbs (The Rock), the biggest, baddest, most cliché spouting federal agent ever, is also hot on their tail. Seriously, Hobbs pretty much just yells lines that Tommy Lee Jones said in “The Fugitive”. He spends every second in the middle of a roid-rage meltdown; sweaty, twitchy, and about to explode his biceps all over the place. At one point he also says that his team had better be wearing their “thunderwear”, so there’s that. Amidst all of this, our anti-heroes have to try to figure out how to steal $100 million dollars so they can all retire in style and freedom.

The story of “Fast Five” is stupid, but it’s the best kind of stupid, and story’s not why you dragged your ass all the way to the theater, is it? You want to see cars driving, guns firing, brawny giants fighting, chase scenes galore, and if a couple of ass shots happen to find their way into the film, that doesn’t hurt the situation any. That’s the foundation the “Fast & Furious” franchise is built upon. The only chink in the otherwise gloriously absurd armor of “Fast Five” is that this time around the producers tried to make a heist film instead of a straight up action film. The pace definitely falters when it tries to be clever (it’s not), and there is a bait and switch move that is straight out of one of the “Ocean’s” movies. But this isn’t much of an issue, because “Fast Five” never takes itself too seriously, and even when it does get melodramatic and emotional, like when Dom and a sexy Brazilian cop bond for a moment over dead loved ones, those moments are so asinine and cheesy that you can’t help but laugh your ass off.

At times “Fast Five” spends too much time building up, and you think the payoff can’t possibly be worth it, but Ramon says things like how his share of the score will mean “a lot of vaginal activity”, so even when it gets slow, it’s never boring. By the time you get to the big climactic scene, you’re ready for an epic chase, and you will not be let down. You haven’t seen cinematic mayhem and destruction since “Bad Boys II”. “Fast Five” wrecks half of Rio in magnificently over-the-top fashion, and, if you go in expecting a movie that is both ridiculous and ridiculously entertaining, you shouldn’t be disappointed. This is the kind of movie where they throw two grenades at you, because one grenade is never enough.

Film Fast five synopsis:

Scream 4 Review
It's been a quiet eleven years for Sidney Prescott, who has managed to go a full decade without having a masked killer terrorize her and systematically kill her friends. But that's all about to change, as Scream 4 introduces the latest incarnation of the killer nicknamed Ghostface back into Sidney's life and into theaters.

The original Scream was one of those perfect little films, combining a killer (excuse the pun) script from then-newcomer Kevin Williamson, with the proven scary movie talents of Wes Craven. It was funny, it was scary and it contained a well-done murder mystery. The first sequel, Scream 2, while not as strong as the original, was still very enjoyable, though unfortunately, Scream 3 left a lot to be desired. But with so much time since the last installment, has bringing Craven, Williamson and the original cast back managed to revitalize the franchise? Happily, the answer is yes.

In a series known for having big opening scenes, Scream 4 announces its arrival with a rather brilliantly-conceived sequence, which I don't want to give away the details of. Suffice to say, it works on multiple levels and immediately promises that this series is going to continue having postmodern fun with not just horror movie cliches, but what are its own cliches at this point.

No shock, but that sequence ends in murder, just as Sidney (Neve Campbell) is returning to her home town of Woodsboro. Sidney is winding up a book tour, having written a memoir about all she has survived. But with new victims turning up, Sidney is quickly reunited with the now-married Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Dewey Riley (David Arquette), as the trio once more try to figure out who is behind these murders and why they're doing it.

While Sidney is (once again) a target, so is her young cousin, Jill (Emma Roberts), a current student at Sidney's old high school from the first film. History begins to repeat itself, as Jill and her friends are stalked by the killer, who has a whole new collection of movie trivia questions with which to taunt intended victims.

Scream 4 has a bit of a balancing act it needs to navigate, as we're essentially following two sets of main characters. There's the adult characters, including the returning Sidney, Dewey and Gale. In addition, there's also Dewey's deputies (including Anthony Anderson and Adam Brody), one of whom (Marley Shelton) is clearly crushing on Dewey, plus Sidney's bitchy publicist (Alison Brie). And then there's the younger, high school age group, comprised of Jill, her best friends Kirby (Hayden Panettiere) and Olivia (Marielle Jaffe), requisite movie geeks Robbie (Erik Knudsen) and Charlie (Rory Culkin), and Jill's brooding ex-boyfriend, Trevor (Nico Tortorella). It's a bit much, and in the mid-section, the film feels a bit disjointed, as we jump back and forth between the groups

Overall though, Scream 4 is very effective. It's Craven's best film since Scream 2, back in 1997, as the veteran horror director seems to flourish (Scream 3 aside) when telling a story of this sort and balancing the comedy and horror elements. For horror fans, there are several good jumps and a decent amount of gore, though I wouldn't qualify this film as particularly scary. However, it definitely works as a thrill ride and if you're a fan of this franchise, it provides exactly the kind of horror meets comedy tone you want from a Scream film.

The cast is strong, with Campbell, Cox and Arquette easily stepping back into their old roles – though of the three, I'd say Arquette has the least to do in this installment. For the most part, the new cast members offer good performances as well, with Roberts having the appropriate girl next door vibe and Panettiere getting some amusing moments as the film-savvy Kirby. Tortorella is a bit hammy, in an underwritten role. Fans of certain actors in the cast, which also includes Battlestar's Mary McDonnell as Jill's mother, may be disappointed by the rather small roles they have, but it goes with the territory - what better way to establish that everyone is a suspect than to have so many recognizable people in the movie?

By the way, you may have noticed I haven't mentioned the appearance of several other familiar young actresses seen in the trailers for Scream 4 - but again, it's a case where saying too much would be taking a lot of the fun away. I'll just say these cameos were very appreciated.

The first Scream specifically targeted scary movies (slasher movies to be precise), with Scream 2 taking self-aware jabs at sequels and Scream 3 acknowledging film trilogies. While Scream 4 has a number in its title, proudly proclaiming it is another sequel, there is certainly a specific topic brought up here, one that feels quite appropriate given the output from Hollywood in the past decade: Remakes, or "reboots," if you insist on the term. With the series back in Woodsboro and a new crop of teen characters at the center, it's not lost on the characters that a real-life "remake" of the original film is happening, via the killer's bloody actions, and there are some crowd-pleasing elements involving this fact. Oh, and when it comes to name dropping other horror films, no, the fact that there have been seven Saw films since Scream 3 came out is not ignored.

There were reportedly some rather notable issues behind the scenes on Scream 4, which resulted in Williamson leaving the project and Ehren Kruger doing the final rewrites. For many fans, myself included, this was a point of concern, as Williamson seemed so essential as the voice of the series – and Scream 3, written solely by Kruger, felt so lacking. The final credits simply say "Written by Kevin Williamson," with Kruger given a producing credit. While I haven't read any of the drafts of the script to know for certain how much of Williamson's material remains, I will say that Scream 4 definitely feels like Williamson is behind it – it has his wit and his approach stamped into its DNA. There are a few jokes that fail to land, and as mentioned earlier, the film's middle portion is a bit shaky, but overall, Scream 4 delivers. The first film is still the best, but this is much more in line with (and perhaps even better than) the fun of Scream 2 than the drab Scream 3

Bookending the strong opening, the ending of Scream 4 is clever and highly entertaining, and I enjoyed the revelation of the killer's identity and their very modern motive and justification. And while there will almost certainly be more Scream films (everyone involved has talked about this likely being the first in a new trilogy), Scream 4's conclusion also works well enough that it could serve as a nice series-ender, should they decide to finish it here.

Rio (2011) is the latest creation of the Brazilian filmmaker Carlos Saldanha, the same director of the extraordinary “Ice Age”. With an own script, Saldanha makes a tribute to his native Rio de Janeiro in a story full of birds.

Blue is the only blue macaw of its kind but lives many miles away from its natural environment. Now lives as a domestic bird in the cold lands of Minnesota protected by its owner Linda, until one day a wildlife conservationist offers them to travel to Brazil to pair up Blue with the only female macaw (Perla) left in order to preserve the exotic species. With the fears that involve this long journey, bird and owner take the adventure of their lives.

This movie is like Brazil; joyful, funny, musical an extremely colorful. There are many elements and characters that were retained from the successfully “Ice Age” and we will see transformed now, for example, in the case of the unforgettable opossums, in an anxious, evil but finally silly monkeys (the species known as Callithrix).

Children and adults will enjoy by watching a huge number of species that are part of the adventures that these pair of macaws must pass through while they are hunted down by bird smugglers willing to separate them. Woodpeckers, canaries, cardinals, cockatoos, toucans and even a slobbery but noble bulldog are part of these animal cast.

Rio is a too nice story, with good animation and with love story through dance and colors. From the movie I like its message about pets care, sense of ownership to them and our commitment of preserving and not destroying the species that are part of this world. In synthesis, the film has a environmental message purely. The film revolves around this and becomes a good lesson for children, so that from kids, they understand that the animals should be treated with responsibility, they must loved, protected and the most important, treated with dignity.

A true animated film for children with good 3D and a love story that brings back the fever of Rio, Samba and Brazil

If “Limitless” has taught me anything, it’s that drugs are awesome. I mean, really, super, awesome awesome. Besides making you the coolest, smartest, and most good looking guy in the room, drugs can also turn you into a Wall Street whiz. Plus, chicks want to have sex with you. Like, all the time. Everywhere. And we’re talking hot chicks too. Exotic ladies from places where they speak in funny accents, even. It’s friggin awesome. Or at least, that’s what Neil Burger’s “Limitless” taught me. I’m sure there must have be an underlying theme somewhere that goes beyond that simple idea, but I can’t find it, and honestly, I don’t want to dig too deep because it might mess up my buzz.

The drug of choice for failed writer Eddie Morra (Bradley Cooper) is a little clear looking raindrop of a gem called NZT. It’s experimental, definitely not FDA-approved (despite what his ne’er-do-well ex-brother-in-law Vernon (Johnny Whitworth) tells him), but man, does it come with presents galore. The drug’s number one problem? It tends to make you gimpy. Or dead. Depending on your lot in life, one of those side affects may be unfavorable. Until then, though, you’re flying high, and as Vernon promises, you’ll be accessing that 80% of your brain that you never have before. You’ll be remembering things you didn’t even remember you could, you know, remember, see your enemies make their move before they realize they’re about to make it, and decipher Wall Street shenanigans with ease. Unless you stop taking NZT. That’s when the bad stuff kicks in. But hey, as long as you don’t stop taking it, what’s to worry about? Am I right?

Of course, there’s plenty for our man Eddie to worry about. After ditching his writing gig for the much more lucrative world of finance, Eddie’s newfound (and instant) fame in the money game brings him to the attention of a couple of unsavory types. Corporate raider Carl Van Loon (Robert De Niro) and a heavily-accented loan shark thug (Andrew Howard) both want a piece of Eddie, for essentially the same reason — make more money for them. Plus, his new ability to pick up foreign languages (and foreign chicks) has turned off his long-time girlfriend Lindy (Abbie Cornish), who he lost, won back, and loses again. Add to that an impending murder charge that he may or may not have committed and a creepy looking middle age guy stalking his every turn, and Eddie’s fortunes are suddenly not looking so hot. Maybe NZT isn’t all it’s cracked up to be after all?

Directed by Neil Burger, the man responsible for the excellent and underappreciated “The Illusionist”, “Limitless” is one heck of a breezy hop and a scotch down the rabbit hole. The film’s premise allows Burger to use a variety of camera tricks to make his point. When Eddie is on NZT, he literally steps out of his own body, and time and space become a blur. The film is surprisingly CG heavy, since in order to achieve the cinematic effect of Eddie on NZT, Burger uses everything from neverending camera zooms to some nifty scenes of Eddie working a room from end to end in one faux continuous shot. Burger has never really directed a pure action movie (though there are plenty of action in “Limitless”, including a pretty impressive fight in a subway station), but I would love to see him dive head-first into the genre sometime in the future. There are some intense, well-staged fights to be found here.

Cooper is ideal for the role, and his transformation from loser to winner goes beyond an expensive haircut and new threads. Eddie’s change is not just cosmetic, it’s more in the personality, the attitude that Eddie (by way of Bradley Cooper) beam off him like great big headlights. Robert De Niro is, well, Robert De Niro. I never really bought his corporate raider, but he’s good for a chuckle or two, especially whenever he channels his back alley knuckle breaker in a three-piece suit, which he does oh so brilliantly. Abbie Cornish has the thankless role of Eddie’s girlfriend, which really doesn’t amount to much, though the contrast of a mousy Cornish in “Limitless” and her upcoming, machine-gun packing role in Zack Snyder’s “Sucker Punch” kept me plenty occupied. Andrew Howard brings the viciousness as the thug Gennady, and is delightfully evil throughout. Possibly the film’s best scene involves Gennady late in the movie that had members of the screening audience in equal measures laughing and cringing.

“Limitless” is based on the novel by Alan Glynn called “The Dark Fields”, which, I hear, was much more bleak. The movie version, adapted by longtime Hollywood screenwriter Leslie Dixon (the gal has been around since 1987′s “Outrageous Fortune”), is a breezy and entertaining movie that effortlessly sprints by in a blur of impressive visuals, an excellent soundtrack, and catchy, often amusing narration from hero Eddie Morra. There may or may not be a message anywhere in “Limitless” (“Drugs are bad, kids. Mmmkay?”), not that it matters. I had a blast swimming in the film’s often chaotic visual razzle dazzle, and like good ol Eddie popping his first NZT capsule, left feeling pretty good about myself.
